A grief support group is a small, regular gathering of people who have each lost someone, guided by a trained facilitator. There is no pressure to speak; many people simply listen at first. Over time, members share memories, struggles, and practical ways they are getting through the hard days, and most discover the particular relief of being around people who genuinely understand. Sessions typically last about an hour.
At Seasons Hospice, groups offered through our bereavement services in Tulsa and Muskogee, Oklahoma are free and open-hearted, and you can attend as often or as little as helps you.
Do I have to talk?
No. Listening is participation. Facilitators never call on anyone, and many members spend their first sessions quietly. When you are ready to speak, the room will hold it well.
Who attends grief groups?
Widows and widowers, adult children, parents, siblings, friends. Some groups are general; others gather people with a shared kind of loss, which can deepen the sense of being understood. Grief support of this kind is a recognized part of bereavement care after a death.
Is a group better than one-on-one counseling?
They serve differently, and many people use both. Groups offer community and the medicine of “me too”; individual counseling offers privacy and depth. Bereavement counseling itself is a component of the hospice benefit under Medicare, and at Seasons both forms are free.
What if walking in the first time feels impossible?
Call us first. A member of our bereavement team will tell you exactly what to expect, answer every question, and even meet you at the door. The hardest step is the threshold, and no one crosses it alone here.
