Why Calling Hospice Is Not Giving Up

seasons-not-giving-upIf you feel that calling hospice means that’s “the end”, then there are aspect of hospice care you’re unfamiliar with.  It’s associated with the end of life, and that gives it a bad wrap to those who may be in need of it. Accepting the need for hospice care does not mean the person in need, or their family members, are giving up.

Hospice provides specialized care and support that creates comfort and ease for the patient and their family.

When those in need understand the benefits of hospice care they won’t treat it as a frightening situation. Instead they’ll accept the care and support that is being provided to them.

What are some of the benefits of hospice that patients and their families can be made aware of?

1. Hospice offers a familiar environment – This may be the most important benefit. A person is more likely to feel at ease in a familiar environment than if they are in strange surroundings. This familiar place can be turned into one that is calm, quiet, and very different from the stress filled environment of the hospital.
2. Hospice offers a comprehensive plan and competent professionals – The goal of hospice care is to provide a comprehensive plan that is executed by a team of medical and healthcare professionals. It is this team’s job to address all aspects of the patients illness so that they can reduce the patient’s pain and discomfort.
3. Hospice offers personalized care and support – Once your hospice team is in place they are on call 24/7. It is their job to ease family anxiety and allow the family to rest between visits. The hospice professionals offer the patient everything from a listening ear to their favorite food.

National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization has done extensive studies on the benefits of hospice, and are a good source to refer to for further information.

To simplify the hospice process for patients and families, we rely on the generosity of our donors.
